About Tillie's Flower Shop

The Tillie’s Flowers tradition of quality and excellence originally began in 1876, when Amos Kuechenmeister came from Germany to settle in Wichita and open the Harry Street Greenhouse on the corner of Harry and Lulu. Amos began his small business by selling the fresh vegetables and bedding plants that he and his wife Elise cared for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The original Harry Street Greenhouse met the local demand for quality vegetables and plants.

As his business grew, so did his family. Amos and his wife came to have seven children. All of Amos and Elise’s children worked in the greenhouse, including their youngest daughter, Matilda, or Tillie for short. While Tillie enjoyed working with the vegetables and plants, she loved working with fresh flowers. It was because of young Tillie insistence that the Harry Street Greenhouse began offering fresh flowers to their customers. Eventually, Tillie’s name became synonymous with fresh, quality flowers, so the Harry Street Greenhouse became Tillie’s Flower Shop in the 1920s, when Tillie herself began running the store.

Over 130 years later, Tillie’s may no longer be a small greenhouse in a budding city, but they are still committed to Tillie’s original passion - beautiful, fresh floral arrangements. In fact, Tillie’s is now Wichita’s largest retail florist and one of the largest in the United States. The business has an east and west location and delivers anywhere in Wichita and the surrounding area. The two stores currently employ more than 30 people and nearly three times that many during busy holiday seasons.

Tillie’s son, Ken Denton, and his wife Kathy run the business along with two of their children, Jocelyn and Jennifer, making Tillie‘s a third generation, family-owned business. Occasionally, substitutions may be necessary to create your bouquet due to the availability of certain flowers in various parts of the country. Care is taken to maintain the style, theme and color scheme of the arrangement, using flowers of equal value. Additionally, the substitution of certain keepsake items may be necessary due to increased demand, especially during major holidays. In single-flower arrangements, such as an all rose bouquet, or orchids, we will make every attempt to match the flower type, but may substitute with another color.

Holiday Hours

Here at Tillie’s, we will always do our best to accommodate any delivery request you may have. To help ensure on-time delivery during the busy holiday seasons, please place your local order at least 2 days prior to the following floral holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Administrative Professionals Week and Mother’s Day. Orders for delivery in cities outside our local delivery area should be placed at least 3-4 days before the holiday to allow for the potential variables in those cities.

Tillie’s Flower Shop remains open for extended hours on most floral holidays. Please call to confirm specific times.

Our shop will be closed on the day of the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day Weekend, Labor Day Weekend, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. If you have an emergency or need to place an order for a funeral on any of these days, please call us at 800-235-7312 for assistance.

A wire fee of $5.95 and a delivery fee of $10.00 will be added to each wire-out order outside of our local delivery area.

Easel sprays for funeral services must be delivered the evening before or the day of a funeral service in order for the flowers to look fresh during the service.

Delivery of orders to rural route addresses or cemeteries cannot be guaranteed.

For deliveries to businesses, please include the business name as well as the address and a phone number so that your order can be expedited much faster.

We will be happy to accept your international orders if you call our shop directly. We are unable to accept international orders over the Internet.

Valentine's Day and Mother's Day: To ensure delivery for local orders on these busy holidays, please place the order at least two days prior to Valentine's and Mother's Day. Wire-out orders (outside of our local area) must be placed 3-4 days in advance.

WINNER OF TELEFLORA’S FLORIST DESIGN CHALLENGE

Tillie’s is proud and excited to celebrate long-time employee, Larry Strong. Larry is the winner of Teleflora’s National Florist Design Challenge. The contest’s theme was romance and entrants were required to make a fresh, floral arrangement using Teleflora’s red, glass-cubed vase, within a certain price range. Larry’s arrangement, “Delightful Romance,” met all of the requirements and impressed the judges, helping him win $1,000 and a nationally promoted bouquet.

Larry‘s prize money will be donated to the American Cancer Society in honor of his mother and father.

“I wanted to donate the prize in memory of them,” Larry said. “It’s something in my life to honor them with.”

The bouquet creates an ambience of love with fragrant stargazer lilies and romantic red Freedom roses. Hot pink pixie carnations, purple statice and dainty wax flower with flowing bear grass accent and fill the bouquet. Sparkling rhinestone crystals dazzle in the light, making it the perfect bouquet to show romance. According to Larry, such a beautiful arrangement wasn’t inspired by anything in particular.

“I love that color palette of purples, pinks and reds,” Larry said. “When I started working with those colors and flowers…the arrangement just kind of flowed from that.”

The “Delightful Romance” arrangement will be featured on the home page at Tillie’s website.

Larry has 35 years of floral designing experience and started work at Tillie’s in 1979. He has been a guest designer for Valley Wholesale Floral in Wichita and for Stuppy Floral Wholesale in Kansas City, Mo., Quincy, Ill. and Memphis, Tenn.
